Posted on: October 19th, 2011 REVIEW: Uncanny X-Men #544

Uncanny X-men 544 CoverOkay, with all the excitement in the DC Universe, it’s possible our radars have been slightly skewed. So bear with me as I tell you that in the midst of your issue twos, now is a really great time to be reading X-Men titles.

Ah yes, The X-Men. Seems like just yesterday we were all infected with vampirism. I hate to disappoint you, but we’re done with that. And now…the band’s breaking up….kind of. In the aftermath of Schism, Logan and Scott have decided to go their separate ways and people are picking sides. Now, let’s say that you didn’t read Schism (even though I told you to and you totally should). And let’s say you didn’t read the Regenesis One Shot from last week (totally should). You’re going to be fine.

Pick up Uncanny X-Men #544 and it will recap everything. “Wait, wait, wait, Auburn. This clearly says ‘The Final Issue’ and I have not read everything prior to #544.” Yeah, it’s the final issue. Scratch that out and write in ‘Prelude to Regenesis’. Don’t actually write on your comic, you heathen. Although Kieron Gillen does write a lovely wrap-up to all things Uncanny, it’s very accessible to new readers. It’s mopey, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a nice end/beginning to the next X-Stage.

Now, for the most part, I enjoy Greg Land’s art. I know others that don’t share my view. Evidently his use of reference material is sketchy. Quite honestly, I don’t care. I can’t look at a picture and translate it to paper all that well. I’m even worse with Photoshop. I’d rather look at his finished product than the uncontrolled scribbles of someone that thinks they understand facial features. But hey, that’s me. You hate whoever you want. What I think we can agree on is that the two-page nostalgia splash was killer. The composition and balance of it was enough to stop me in my page-turning tracks. It doesn’t matter to me who he was looking at or what software he used when he made it. It’s fun to look at.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to read all the upcoming X-titles. We’ve got New Mutants under Abnett and Lanning, X-Factor by Peter David, Wolverine and the X-Men by Jason Aaron, X-Force by Remender, Uncanny X-Men by Kieron Gillen, Generation Hope by James Asmus, X-Men by Victor Gischler and X-Men Legacy by Mike Carey. And then…you know, there’s this:ITS_COMING

People, I’m so very excited. Jump on board with me.

Schism was awesome. Nice recommendation on that one. I felt the same way about the final Uncanny as well. SO much to see in the final pages. Getting hype for whats to come!
