Just in time for Machete hitting theaters this weekend, we’ve got our first trailer for Hobo With A Shotgun, and AICN landed themselves a doozy - an unrated, head-splitting trailer with Rutger Hauer as the gun-toting titular Hobo.

Watch the trailer now, ya lousy cocksuckers:

I’ll be sleeping in your motherfucking carcass… TA-NIGHT!

I’m far more excited about this than I am Machete. Loving the colors and the genuine lack of a budget. Looks like it was shot on RED.

Why do you say genuine lack of budget? Looks like a highish budget movie made to look ‘lo-fi’ through hokey practical effects. Was there an interview or article highlighting like a self imposed low budget? If so, kudos to them because it looks bang on how a movie like this should.

That shot of the ray-ban wearing character coming through the door with the blue glow behind him stands out to me most in the whole trailer. That character looks like a fucking creep and I want MORE!

(Also, looked it up and learned about red via http://www.vimeo.com/1340684) Neat stuff, really saturated and dirty looking.

I don’t know the actual budget of the film, but I’m sure it wasn’t huge by any stretch. Apparently it took a while to secure funding for the film (since 2007), and the fact that they shot in Halifax with only Hauer being the real name to the film – including the writers/directors first time out, it’s safe to say this is a low budget film. Maybe not micro-budget, like say Paranormal Activity, but I’d be surprised if it cost leagues more.

And that’s not a criticism at all, but I praise that. I don’t think you could do this movie properly with a gigantic budget without it looking put on. It really genuinely looks and feels low budget – again, that’s a good thing. I’m not sure if it was actually filmed with RED, but that could contribute to it looking polished. Most likely it’s shot digitally, either way. And digital is cheaper on a tight budget :P

But yeah man, I totally agree with you, it looks awesome. Love the colors, you can tell Eisener is passionate about the genre and style. You can even see some old Argento Italian horror influence in there, it’s great. And man does Rutger nail that drunk hobo speak, look at the way his mouth purses and his teeth clench when he talks at the beginning.

    I’m psyched.

Oh and yeah, RED stuff is effing gorgeous. Check out Antichrist, that was shot on RED as was District 9 I think.

Totally agree with the low budget look being an asset in this case.

I can’t help but think about Planet Terror (BTW, Google Grindhouse. The picture on the left of the 5 pic spread, coincidentally liked back to GKS!) when watching the trailer. I have a feeling this is more the movie Rodriguez wanted to make than what Planet Terror ended up being. Having big name actors and a budget really made it a whole different beast.

Or was Planet Terror more so paying homage to grindhouse cinema rather than trying to be a true addition to the genre? I seem to remember a few tongue in cheek moments, where as Hobo w/t a Shotgun comes off as an unflinching totally serious to the genre movie.

Wasn’t Hobo With A Shotgun a winner for some contest when Grindhouse came out? I think it was a contests to make your own Grindhouse movie trailer, and it was done at SXSW or Fantastic Fest? Did the winners of that contest win some budget money or something? Hell, I don’t remember. Maybe the prize was just that they showed the trailer at the Grindhouse premier. But for the two people that haven’t seen it, here is the original trailer. I especially love the voiceover guy on this one.

This one looks great. It will probably make 30 bucks, but that could potentially be the budget right there.

Yeah Rodriguez held a contest for fans to make their own Grindhouse trailer and the winner’s was played at the premiere, and in this case all Canadian screenings.
