Posted on: August 7th, 2010 Tony Scott Could Direct Mark Millar’s NEMESIS

millar-mcniven-nemesis-1_final-cover-artboxart_160wThere’s no doubt that Mark Millar has left his mark on comic book history (c’mon, how could I resist that one). The Authority, Superman: Red Son, Wanted, Civil War, The Ultimates and Kick-Ass are some of his most notable works, though lately it seems as though he’s being pulled towards another medium – film. Wanted and Kick-Ass were both feverishly received by audiences, a fair amount you can assume are not comic book readers, and with that Hollywood is knocking on Mr. Millar’s (is it ‘Miller’ or ‘Mill-Arrr’?) door, optioning off every funny book the man has kicking around in his wee Scottish heid.

His latest series with artist Steve McKniven, Nemesis – which we reviewed the first issue here – had not even begun and already the film began development. Early rumors had Sam Raimi in the running to direct, but according to Bleeding Cool, Tony Scott (Man on Fire, True Romance) is attached to direct the film for Fox. I like the idea of an experienced director, mostly known for old-school-like action, taking on a new kind of mature super-hero story. This could be good.

Nemesis, a Marvel book published through their creator-owned imprint Icon, tells the story of a billionaire playboy-type who instead of becoming a Batman-esque hero, becomes a Joker-like villain archetype instead, targeting a new police officer every year, making their life and the city’s a living hell.

It’s still early days on both the Nemesis film and the comics; Millar seems to have a split audience lately, especially with passionate comic fans displeased with the Wanted and (to a lesser degree) Kick-Ass films. Not to mention Nemesis itself is receiving more luke-warm reviews than normal for Millar. We’ll just have to wait and see, on all accounts.
