Posted on: August 2nd, 2010 Robert Rodriguez Could Direct DEADPOOL
About six months ago a rumor made the rounds that Robert Rodriguez was interested in directing the Deadpool movie. While this is pretty awesome, and would give some hope to the seemingly uphill battle Deadpool has to endure, it was taken with a comic book sized grain of salt. Though if what the LA Times is reporting this week is true, Rodriguez directing the merc with a mouth might not be so out of the realm of possibility.
The Times reports that Rodriguez has moved beyond discussion with Fox, and is now in negotiation stages for him to direct. While this by no means confirms Rodriguez’s involvement, we can certainly hope that things work out; if anyone were to make a superhero film that wasn’t tarnished by studio involvement, it would be Rodriguez. And although Fox is notorious for messing with their Marvel properties, Rodriguez seems to have Fox under their spell – they let him do what he wants, seemingly, and he produces fan pleasing films, albeit at a lower budget.
Rodriguez has his hands full right now, coming off promotion for Predators (which he produced) and gearing up for the release of Machete, based on his Grinhouse trailer. After that he’s got another installment of the Spy Kids franchise, but a full open schedule following would be ample time for Deadpool.
The movie will star Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, and the screenplay is being handled by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernic.
