Posted on: April 14th, 2010 Whedon To Re-Write AVENGERS?
We got a pretty large news-nugget dropped on us yesterday with the announcement that Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct The Avengers film. In the article here on GKS I made mention that as far as I can tell, Whedon is far better suited to writing than directing, and I know I’m not alone in that thought.
Apparently Marvel thinks Whedon can write worth a bean too, as Variety is reporting that he will not only direct the film, but re-write the script (which was previously penned by Incredible Hulk scribe Zak Penn).
While I remain slightly cautious with Whedon as a director, I think having him on the script is a fantastic idea. The dude knows his comics, that’s for sure (see his stellar run on Astonishing X-Men, among others). With Whedon in front of the page as well as behind the camera, I’ll bet Whedon can really get comfortable and do his best.
This is also a bit of a relief as Zak Penn – though known for some great writing like Last Action Hero, X2 and The Incredible Hulk – hasn’t had the best of luck with scripts. Specifically Inspector Gadget, Elektra, Fantastic Four and X-Men: The Last Stand.
Whether or not the Whedon stuff is true, we won’t know until some official word comes down the pipe.
