Posted on: April 2nd, 2010 [Bx4VG]: Metroid: Other M
For the week of March 28 – 03: Nintendo has released a new trailer for Metroid: Other M this past week and it looks like the game is finally shaping up. With the past few releases, the Metroid series has gotten into a bit of a funk, rehashing the same innovations Metroid Prime brought to the table. Nintendo, recognizing the need to shake things up, handed the series off to Team Ninja, the same dev house that brought you Ninja Gaiden and DOA: Beach Volleyball.
Now, Team Ninja used to be lead by a man named Tomonobu Itagaki, who has since left. As you can see, he’s a rude dude with attitude which reflected on the types of games the company put out. He encouraged games with high action violence or gigantic boobs on twiggy girls and, more often than not, a combination of the two.
Since his departure we haven’t seen any new releases from the company, so there hasĀ been some speculation on just how much influence he had on the final product and whether or not Team Ninja is cool enough to keep going. Because just look at him. He’s hovering around 93% cool, and when you loose that much cool from your company, you’d be second guessing yourself too.
But fret not dear reader, regardless of the weak title, Metroid: Other M looks like it’s going to be something special. Team Ninja decided to break with recent tradition of a first person Metroid and pulled the camera out to something Super Metroid fans will recognize and still managed to add some first person shooting to the game.
My only concern with all this action is that it has to be distilled down to a very limited button set since only the Wiimote will be used to play. With the complexity of today’s action games, it’s hard to imagine pulling everything off with only a couple of buttons available. What are your thoughts?
And with that, my time here at Giant Killer Squid has come to a close. I’d like to say a huge Thank You to Ryan and the team for putting up with me over the past year. I had a great time doing this, but all good things must come to an end.
This blog truly is a labour of love and I feel lucky to have been apart of it, so if you’ve been reading for a long time or are new to the Squid, please spread the word about the site and support it in anyway you can. Read, comment, link and support the community.
Thanks and until we meet again.
