Posted on: March 26th, 2010 PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 Has A Director
In the feverish financial wake of its success, Paramount was quick to green-light a sequel to Paranormal Activity. Shortly thereafter, as writer-director Oren Peli confirmed he wasn’t returning to helm the second film, and Saw VI director Kevin Gruetert was pulled off the project, a rather odd list of potential directors hit the internet. Among the names on that list were Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind writer), Brad Anderson (Sesssion 9), Greg MacLean (Wolf Creek), and the biggest shocker, Brian De Palma (Scarface, Carrie).
Now, straight from Paranormal mastermind himself, Oren Peli, we can confirm that none of the above directors landed the gig. Instead, the directorial duties for Paranormal Activity 2 will go to Kip Williams. Willaims’ only moderately known work was 2004’s The Door in the Floor with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger.
Oren Peli says, via the official Paranormal Activity website:
“We’re thrilled to have Kip working with us. He is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans… and I can’t wait to be a part of what he’s putting together.
I don’t want to spoil the story, but I promise it’ll surprise you.”
Perhaps this new franchise is doomed like the Saw series, but at this point who are we to judge. If they can do something unique and interesting then I say have at it. It’s hard to stay that positive after the hype, certainly, but as it stands alone, Paranormal Activity was a great entry into the genre.
We’ll see where this goes.
