With exception to Transporter 2, I’ve been keeping a close eye on director Louis Leterrier. Unleashed was a great little film, I dug the hell out of The Incredible Hulk, and I’m really excited to see what he does with the Clash of the Titans remake. If I ever get around to posting it, I’ve been working on a ‘10 Directors to look out for’ article, and Leterrier is on that list.

It’s also been no secret that post-Hulk, Leterrier has voiced a rather rabid interest in directing the upcoming Avengers movie, that would see the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America films converge on the big screen.

Well, according to a recent interview with AICN, Leterrier has let it slip that he is in fact in the running to direct the film. Letterrier says:

“I am on the shortlist, but I’m at the bottom of the shortlist, I’m sure. (Laughs) I don’t know who the other guys are, but I have a great relationship with [Marvel], and I’ve been very vocal to them and everyone else that I am the one to direct it. I loved my time at Marvel. I loved those guys. They’re fantastic. Kevin is such a passionate boss; he gets his hands dirty. It’s a universe I want to keep exploring. I was frustrated with [THE INCREDIBLE HULK]. It was like, “That’s it? Only one superhero? Can I do more???” We’ll see. Time will tell.”

It’s no surprise that Marvel already has a shortlist for Avengers directors. We do know that Iron Man director Jon Favreau will probably not be directing, but rather in a producing role. With a sequel to The Incredible Hulk not likely happening, it would serve the Marvel film universe well to bring somebody on-board who isn’t just passionate, but has worked within the Marvel system. It doesn’t hurt that Leterrier can shoot action really well either.

That being said, at this point we have no clue who else is on that shortlist of directors – it could include Thor director Kenneth Branagh or The First Avenger’s Joe Johnston, but it’s anyone’s guess. If the search for our Captain America actor has shown us anything, it’s that Marvel is (seemingly) committed to picking the right people for the right job. With that being said, I have full confidence (pending Clash of the Titans) in Leterrier assembling The Avengers.
