Posted on: March 13th, 2010 Details on CAESAR, Planet of the Apes Prequel

Planet-of-the-Apes-charlton-hestonThe prequel to Planet of the Apes, a screenplay called Caesar, is nothing new – in fact it’s been in development for around two years. This is one of those properties that seems to gain people and lose people, gets put on the shelf and tossed around like a cheap street-walker.

Well apparently 20th Century Fox is back behind the film, announcing that director Rupert Wyatt is on board to helm the film, now being called Caesar: Rise of the Apes. Wyatt received moderate acclaim for his film The Escapist, which premiered during Sundance in 2008.

The film, which will serve as a prequel to the original Planet of the Apes, and in many ways a retelling of the events which took place during Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Caesar takes place in our time, when humans are still ruling the earth. In short, a doctor is working on a cure for Alzheimer’s and testing viruses on chimps. One chimp in particular, named Caesar, shows great intelligence and over time – a short period of time – begins to evolve, and mutate into closer to what we see in the Planet films; Caesar can talk, and stand more upright, that sort of thing. Caesar then goes on to lead an Ape army – keep in mind that Caesar is the only talking primate in the film – which leads to the eventual fall of humans.

Head on over to CHUD.com, who broke the scoop and have plenty of more details on the film.

Personally, I’m a huge Planet of the Apes fan, and a larger-than-average fan of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, so I’m actually excited about this film. Granted, with these remakes and reboots and sequels and prequels, it’s easy enough to be pessimistic, but I’m holding out on the hope that we can get a new, respectful franchise out of the film.
