Ghostbusters 3: The Death of Venkman?

So here’s the deal – a while ago Sigourney Weaver appears on a talk show to promote Avatar, and the interviewer asks about Ghostbusters 3. In mentioning that everyone is coming back, she drops the bomb that Bill Murray is even returning, this time as a ghost. From there the internet went nuts with speculation – was it a slip up, revealing the actual plot? Was she joking? Has she just lost her mind?
BIll Murray has stayed pretty mum on the whole Ghostbusters 3 front, until now. In an article in the Sunday Mail, Murray has more or less confirmed his involvement in the film as a ghost himself.
“I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.”
This could go either way; killing off one of the souls of the film is either a stroke of genius, or it could bomb horribly. I’m of the mind that a third Ghostbusters shouldn’t even be made, so whether or not Peter Venkman is a ghost is irrelevant. Regardless, Murray has never sounded too enthusiastic about returning to the property, and I question the point of having him as a ghost. Venkman was funny enough alive, do we really need to return to territory covered perfectly in The Frighteners?
Call me a pessimist, call me a cynic, call me a fanboy – I just have a bad feeling about this.
What are your thoughts on dead Venkman and Ghostbusters 3?

I figure they don’t kill him and they make him get like “ghost kidnapped” to the other side or something.

That’s a good guess. I’m hoping it will be something more than that tired story, but you’re probably right.
If it was filmed in the same vein as the first two, I think it would be pretty cool, but this screams crappy CG that’ll be dated by the end of the year. Sounds like an alright price to pay to see more Murry and Aykroyd on the screen though.
Feels like the game was a primer on this whole development. They said it was basically Ghostbusters 3, so I wonder if any of it will be referenced as part of the story?
They seem to be following the comic series Ghostbusters: The Otherside. Basically Ghostbusters busts in on the mob (ghosts), Peter gets his sould knocked out of him and is possessed. The other three are killed. They all meet in the afterlife, Peter has superpowers. Gangster ghosts and Ghostbusters fight. They all live happily ever after.
