2009 is winding down to a close – and believe me we’ve got some ‘Best Of’ lists coming your way – but for now, here’s a guide to some of the big flicks you’ll want to be ready for next year. Though maybe not as good as this year, 2010 has a ton of highly anticipated movies, so we’ve broken it into two parts. Here’s part I, stay tuned for part II real soon.
Daybreakers
Who directs: Peter and Michael Spierig (who also wrote it).
Who’s in it: Ethan Hawke, Willam Dafoe, Sam Neill
What’s it about: In the year 2019, vampires are the majority. As the human race nears extinction, one vampire risks everything to save them. Check out my review for the film – this is not a prissy Twilight flick.
When is it: January 8.

Book of Eli
Who directs: The Hughes Brothers.
Who’s in it: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis.
What’s it about: A post-apocalyptic thriller with Denzel guarding the ‘book of eli’, a source of knowledge that could save the society. Denzel fight scenes? Sold.
When is it: January 15.

The Lovely Bones
Who directs: Peter Jackson (who also co-wrote the screenplay adaptation).
Who’s in it: Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci.
What’s it about: Based on the popular novel by Alice Sebold, the film follows a young girl, murdered and in purgatory, trying to stop her killer from striking again.
When is it: January 15.

Shutter Island
Who directs: Martin Scorcese.
Who’s in it: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Jackie Earle Haley.
What’s it about: A Scorcese horror film? Yes, please. Shutter Island has two investigators solving the case of the missing nutjob in a mental institution for the criminally insane.
When is it: February 19.

Wolfman
Who directs: Joe Johnston.
Who’s in it: Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving.
What’s it about: It’s a fairly straight-forward remake of the 1941 classic.
When is it: February 12.

A Couple of Dicks (actual title TBA)
Who directs: Kevin Smith.
Who’s in it: Bruce Willis, Tracey Morgan.
What’s it about: A buddy cop flick in the vein of Beverly Hills Cop, about two police officers on the hunt for a stolen baseball card.
When is it: February 26.
The Crazies
Who directs: Breck Eisner.
Who’s in it: Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell.
What’s it about: A remake of George Romero’s 1973 flick in which the people of a small town begin to go violently insane.
When is it: February 26.

Alice In Wonderland
Who directs: Tim Burton.
Who’s in it: Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover (and a slew of high-profile voices).
What’s it about: A continuation of Lewis Carroll’s original story finds Alice older, and back in Wonderland. The film will mix live-action and motion-capture in 3D.
When is it: March 5.

Hot Tub Time Machine
Who directs: Steve Pink.
Who’s in it: John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke.
What’s it about: A time machine, that doubles as a hot tub, sends 4 friends back in time to 1986.
When is it: March 19.

Clash of the Titans
Who directs: Louis Leterrier.
Who’s in it: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes.
What’s it about: An action-packed fantasy film about the war between men, kings and gods. A remake of the 1981 film of the same name.
When is it: March 26.

Kick-Ass
Who directs: Matthew Vaughn.
Who’s in it: Aaron Johnson, Nicholas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
What’s it about: A timid fanboy becomes a real-life superhero and discovers he’s not alone in the quest for justice. Based on the violent and funny comic series from acclaimed writer Mark Millar.
When is it: April 16.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Who directs: Samuel Bayer.
Who’s in it: Jackie Earle Haley, Clancy Brown, Kyle Gallner.
What’s it about: A remake of the 1984 classic that spawned a legendary character and franchise. This version is taking a darker approach to the story of Freddy Krueger, the horrific figure that haunts the dreams of the the children of Springwood.
When is it: April 30.

Piranha 3D
Who directs: Alexandre Aja.
Who’s in it: Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Christopher Llyod, Jerry O’Connell, Richard Dreyfuss.
What’s it about: This remake of the 1978 film, now in 3D, can only be about killer piranhas. Prehistoric piranhas, actually.
When is it: April 16.
Iron Man 2
Who directs: Jon Favreau.
Who’s in it: Robert Downey, Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Sam Jackson.
What’s it about: In the anticipated sequel to the applauded Iron Man, Tony Stark now faces off against ruthless weapons dealer Justin Hammer and Russian whip-wielding villain Whiplash. The film will also introduce Marvel characters War Machine and Black Widow.
When is it: May 7.
Robin Hood
Who directs: Ridley Scott.
Who’s in it: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt.
What’s it about: A new version of the legendary tale of Robin of Locksley, a crusader who returns to his homeland only to find it under the ruthless tyranny of the Sherrif of Nottingham.
When is it: May 14.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Who directs: Mike Newell.
Who’s in it: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina.
What’s it about: The team that brought you the Pirates of the Caribbean series adapts the popular video-games. It appears to be uninspired crap akin to the Scorpion King, but with more caucasian actors.
When is it: May 26.
