Smallville Reveals The Justice Society
Smallville took its time in introducing other DC characters in the first few seasons, but as of late the show has been churning out small-screen versions of our favorite heroes and villains like mad. On top of giving Clark an anti-Superman costume, the ninth season, which began airing at the end of September, has seen additions to the cast including Zod, Jor-El, Metallo, Speedy, the Wonder Twins. And that’s not all…
Remember the season 6 episode “Justice” that had fanboys bouncing on the couch with the formation of the (sort of) Justice League (comprised of Green Arrow, Impulse, Cyborg, Aquaman and Clark)? Well as cool as that was, it still played like an homage to the source material, rather than a direct, live-action port within reason. That’s not the case, or so it seems, for the big Smallville event this season, the two-hour Smallville: Absolute Justice which will feature the Justice Society of America!
The trailer below (and some stills courtesy of our brother-from-another-mother ForcesOfGeek.com) makes it pretty apparent that this version of the Justice Society is pretty darn close to its comic book counterparts. So far, confirmed for this JSA roster are Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl though if you look closely, it appears as though we’re also gonna get Sandman and Green Lantern (Alan Scott)! It’s also been reported that Absolute Justice will feature Pam Grier as Amanda Waller.
Though no specific plot details are known yet, the idea is that the Justice Society were a well-established group in the 70’s; this leads me to believe that Earth II, or similar, alternate timeline will be involved. TV Guide has a pretty interesting interview with Michael Shanks, who plays Hawkman, with some clues as to what we could see with this JSA.
The event was originally intended as two regular length episodes, “Justice” and “Legends” and were penned by DC’s golden-egg writer Geoff Johns. Smallville: Absolute Justice airs on the CW on February 5th, 2010.
