UPDATE: Collider caught up with Jackie Earle himself on the red carpet of the Scream Awards and asked him about the Sinestro rumor. In short, he hasn’t been approached yet and this rumor is just that for now. Check out their exclusive report here
We here at GKS don’t often post rumors, so this should be taken with a large grain of salt but it was just too good not to acknowledge…
The rumor at hand is that Jackie Earle Haley – now infamous for his portrayal of Rorschach in Watchmen, and soon Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street remake – has been cast as Sinestro in the Green Lantern film.
AICN broke this rumor late last night, and apparently their source is “someone working on the film” – while that sounds pretty damn legit, I’ll still believe it when I see it. But I will say that if this is indeed true, then that’s a fantastic choice for the role of the past-lantern-turned-villain. Haley has got the look (albeit not the height) and most definitely has the acting chops to pull this one off.
For those of you unfamiliar with Sinestro, he is the nemesis of the Green Lantern Corps. He was once a powerful Green Lantern himself, and mentor to Hal Jordan, but was banished from the Green Lantern Corps for using fear in an attempt to put order to the galaxy. Since then he formed his own army, the Sinestro Corps, with their own yellow power rings and hordes of fear-mongers like himself.
Don’t expect Sinestro to be the villain in the movie, however. Apparently the film will feature the villain’s Hector Hammond and Legion and will borrow heavily from the Emerald Dawn story-arc. It looks like Sinestro could be a background element, possibly being set-up as the villain for the sequel.
But that’s not all from AICN’s source; according to them, Superman is still set to make a cameo appearance in the film. If you were anywhere remotely near the internet back in September last year, you’ll have read Latino Review’s exclusive script review of the film which corroborates a Clark Kent appearance. If this turns out to be true it looks like DC is taking a page from Marvel’s franchise-crossing book. If the big red n’ blue does make an appearance though, don’t hold your breath for Brandon Routh in the tights.
