The final script for Spider-Man 4 hasn’t even been finished yet and already the deal has been made for the fifth and sixth films. James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Rundown), who wrote the first draft screenplay for the fourth installment, will return to pen the fifth and sixth films. It should be noted that David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots, Inkheart) and Gary Ross (Big, Seabiscuit) have already rewritten Vanderbilt’s screenplay for SM4; I’m curious as to how much of Vanderbilts story is still in there. Sony must really like what Vanderbilt’s cooked up, or perhaps we may see a continuing story arc?
I highly doubt that Sam Raimi will direct the wall-crawler past Spider-Man 4, and I can’t see main players Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst returning either. Maguire will be 37 when Spider-Man 4 comes out; if he were to stay on for the next two sequels that means we’d see a 45 year old Peter Parker dealing with puberty and adolescence issues. So if anything it might be good to get some fresh hands on the franchise, and there’s certainly no lack of great stories to be told, provided they’re told greatly. There are even some rumors of the franchise being completely rebooted, which wouldn’t surprise me either.
So far the only confirmed cast for Spider-Man 4 are Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and J.K. Simmons reprising his fantastic role as J. Jonah Jameson. The villain(s), though highly specualted to be the Lizard, Morbius or Carnage, has not been revealed. The film is set to hit theaters May 6, 2011.
