Can The WOLVERINE Sequel Be Saved? Possibly…
It’s no mystery that I did not like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and rightfully so; from minute one to the end credits the film was a lamely executed mess of poor character development and ridiculous plot-devices. The film’s script was no doubt the weakest link here. Let’s face it, with a great script there is endless potential for a really kick-ass Wolverine movie. The character has plenty of fodder in the back-issue bin. But as Hollywood has so often proved, lack of quality does not end a franchise. X-Men Origins: Wolverine did make a butt-load of bank, with over $180 million domestically and a sequel was announced almost right after its release.
This news give me a little hope though… FOX has hired Christopher McQuarrie to write the sequel, which will be based on the Frank Miller-Chris Claremont mini-series that saw Wolverine in Japan (a setting that was teased at the end of Origins).
For those who aren’t immediately familiar with McQuarrie, he is the superb writer behind The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun (which he also directed) and Valkyrie.
On paper things are looking up for a good Wolverine flick, but then FOX pops into my head and I remember how much they’ve messed with us in the past. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…
No other cast or crew have been confirmed except Hugh Jackman and Christopher McQuarrie.
