Just when I thought I couldn’t love Frank Darabont more, he goes and does something like this. Word has it that Darabont has almost signed a deal to write and direct a TV series adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comics (Image) for AMC. To say this is exciting for horror/comic fans would be an understatement.

The Walking Dead is an ongoing comic series that started in 2003, chronicling a small group of people that come together in the aftermath of a zombie outbreak. The book is highly revered for it’s use of linear, involving storytelling which focuses not on the zombie-horror aspect of the situation, but the inter-personal relationships and survival of the group.

In my opinion Darabont is the way to go with this. He’s proven he can handle serious themes and emotion (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) and he can pull of fun, traditional horror (the highly underrated The Mist). Darabont has had plenty of experience with writing, producing and directing for television (including the 1990 tv-movie gem Buried Alive), if this all goes ahead we could be for something really special; never before has this type of story been told in that format. It would really cool if this series keeps with the book and is in black and white, to truly capture the feel of Kirkman’s story. Darabont is also no stranger to black and white, on the special edition The Mist DVD, there is a version that can be watched sans color which is really much better than the theatrical release.

Unfortunately all we really know about The Walking Dead series is that AMC is trying to get this locked. Until then, go and pick up the books; they are awesome and I guarantee you will burn through the whole series so far in a week.

I’m excited if it’s done well.

If it is done wrong though? And they ruin this for me? This, the greatest of comic books that I love. If they kill it for me? I’ll destroy them!

I am a fan of Darabont, though I disagree with your take on The MIst, it was fantastic and going really good up until the end, I never read the book, so i don’t know if thats how it ends, but I digress.
Unfamilar with this particular series of books, but if it has Zombies and Darbont count me in.
