Posted on: August 9th, 2009 Collector’s Edge – ALIENS!!!
So now I am settling into my new home on Sundays, and nothing says the end of the week like aliens invading everything. I’m going to take a look at Halo (again) cause it seems to be the easiest license to whore out, Mars Attacks and a few other great things this week. Let’s see what we have…
Yes, I am a Tim Burton fiend. I am all over his work and Mars Attacks is one of those works that I just feels works on many levels. It is funny, it is campy, it is a throwback to everything we used to love about movies as we grew up. Hell, it’s why we love the movies as it is – they are fun. The original action figure line up included toys from the movie and toys from the card series. I didn’t really dig the card series style though. So now we have new collectables from Mars Attacks!! And all I can say is where is the Martian Spy Girl large scale figure? Hmm? Lisa Marie is an uber hottie and the Martian Spy Girl was really the coolest part of the movie. So where is she? Despite this glaring omission, these figures are f-ing sweet.
Galactus at large.
I used to think that no one did superhero figures like ToyBiz did the Marvel line. I had a really hard time accepting the switch to Hasbro. It’s not that Hasbro made bad toys, it’s just ToyBiz was an awesome toy maker. They even made DarkStalkers! Yet the more and more I see from Hasbro the happier I am. Case in point. Galactus. How do you do him justice? We all know Fantastac Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer changed him into a space cloud. Previous figures have not really been imposing enough. Hasbro’s fixed all that with a mammoth figure. I mean, the dude is huge. It’s pretty nice to know they are willing to go out there with this figure just to make fanboys like me happy, so kudos to you Hasbro. Kudos. Now if we could just get some new DarkStalkers figures from them….
The RISK in Halo
I used to be all about the licensed versions of major board games. I had all the different versions of Stratego and Monopoly and of course RISK. The problem is, mostly, that these licensed version don’t offer anything different other than a larger price point. RISK Clone Wars edition did change the set up with the Order 66 deal that screwed the Jedi Players hardcore, so that was a good tie in. But Lord of the Rings RISK was just a timed game, all the Stratego’s were just different pictures and Monopoly is Monopoly no matter how you look at it. I now only have one Monopoly, and it’s the Star Wars Saga Edition. I realized after the fire that I did not need a Monopoly game for ever thing I loved. I never played them. Point being, what exactly does Halo Wars have to offer to the RISK formula? It’s not like RISK 2210 where you can take over the moon, or RISK Godstorm where you play as Gods too and can go to the underworld. What does Halo bring to the fold? Nothing. It’s just another excuse to slap a license (albeit a very popular one) on a good game that really doesn’t need it. I guess I shall just have to see for myself when it comes out.
I am an Aliens fan. Always figured they could kick the Predators ass if they really tried. I have seen an awful lot of Aliens inspired product out there. Of all of them my favorite had to be TreeHouse Kids Aliens series that were like little green plastic army men. Those things were friggin sweet. Hot Toys has now made a big figure of the original Alien. I always preferred the James Cameron redesigns however. And now I remember why – the original Alien made me think of a robot. Take a good look at the figure, it really does look like a creepy robot for reals. I do like the see through head and all, but give me a big figure from Aliens and then we’ll be talking.
Mattel Pushes My Buttons, The Right Ones
You probably read how Mattel is screwing over DC lovers with their exclusives and poor assortments in various locations. That is pretty crappy. But on the other hand, you have Mattycollector.com and they are doing something very right with He-Man. He-Man is my all time favorite cartoon I grew up with and they are doing the license serious justice. I am ever so pissed that the revamped series in 2000 got cut short. It was an excellent reboot and the Four Horsemen’s designs were right on. But since then, Matty Collector has been carrying on the He-Man love torch for us all. You gotta order the pieces through the special Matty Collector website, but hey it beats not finding them.
The Return Of GI Joe
I loved the new GI Joe movie. It was everything I hoped for and more. And I really loved that they rewrote some of the backstory history so we can just glaze over the whole Cobrala animated movie story line cause let’s face it, that story line sucked donkey balls. The best thing about this new movie is it is bringing back GI Joe the way it was meant to be – 4 inch figures with an array of bad ass vehicles. Not like Sigma Six or any of those other bad attempts. Now my son can have the GI Joe experience I had as a kid and I can promise you he is already loving it, and he’s only three and a half.
Gavin’s Most Wanted!!
Wow. I didn’t even know this figure existed! After reading Ryan’s article I popped into WalMart to see what they had and I saw Batman Beyond on the back of the box. Where is this figure? I must have it!
