Wow. This is awesome.

The sequel to Disney’s TRON, 1982’s aweseome and equally important sci-fi action film, hasn’t been a mystery for quite some time. It was highlighted briefly at last year’s SDCC with some early footage that was bootlegged for a while. At that point it was rumored that the title would be TR2N. Then a few months ago, speculation was that the film would take the same name of it’s predecessor, simply and confusingly, TRON.

Well at SDCC today we got a whole lot more for our eyes to feast on for the anticipated follow up. The film is now officially titled TRON: LEGACY. There are light cycles. There is Jeff Bridges as Flynn. There is some serious viral buzz.

And there is footage. Check it out.

Color me impressed, this flick looks fun as hell. It appears to have the perfect blend of retro-stylization with some pretty beefy modern effects. It doesn’t look cheesey, it looks badass.

Here’s Disney’s official synopsis:

TRON is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (GARRETT HEDLUND), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (JEFF BRIDGES), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Check out a picture of the new-ish light cycle:

Oh, and another badass thing about TRON: LEGACY – the soundtrack will be provided by Daft Punk.

Discuss.

The film will be released in Disney IMAX 3D in 2010.

    That looks bloody amazing!
I’d never even heard anything about this. Can hardly believe they’re making a sequel. Trouble is, I’ve linked this to a few people and it’s made me realize that nobody I know has even seen Tron!

Stylish retro is right, looks like they’ve got the aesthetics bang on. Sound track, check.

I’m relieved they ditched the faddish TR2N name but Legacy is a little generic in my opinion even with the father, son angle.

After your article on 3D in the theater, I’m curious what your opinion is on this movie doing the 3D thing too. An exception? You have to admit this is one of the more appropriate fits for 3D. Excuse my rhyme.

I’m hoping they go to an alternate Tron world for a scene that is produced in the same way as the original, with the animated glow drawn onto the celluloid and other effects they added to give the original such a unique look.

Agree with you on all points, Dale.

In regards to 3D… yes this film makes it appropriate given the content, but I stick with my guns; it will do nothing to enhance the story-telling experience. Unless it is a seamless technology, unless I am unaware that X or Y is in 3D, then it remains a superflous factor.

    Wow.

What can I say, the trailer looks awesome. I am a fan of the original movie, but what actually struck me first off was the similarity in styling to one of my favorite FPS games in recent years, Tron 2.0. The game is still rather underrated and was certainly underplayed at the time of its release. Even the movie’s plot sounds somewhat similar (The game dealt with Alan Bradley’s son getting digitized in order to look for his missing father inside the computer system). I can’t help but wonder if the game’s reception and legacy would be more positive if it had been released after a sequel film (which was the initial basis for the game’s development).

Regardless of that, I’m excited that Jeff Bridges is back as Kevin Flynn, and hopefully Bruce Boxleitner will have a cameo role of some sort in the film, since it would be nice to pay homage to Alan Bradley and his Tron program. I’ll be there on opening day for this film.
