flash-forward

With sci-fi tv shows dropping like flies (T:SCC, The Unusuals, Reaper etc) it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find quality sci-fi programming outside of on the Sci-Fi (soon to be SyFy) channel.  I enjoy the occasional Sci-Fi channel show; they’ve been able to produce decent original series’ over the last few years.  But I honestly believe that sci-fi programming on one of the major networks has a far greater chance to succeed because of all the increased add revenue potential.  The quality also tends to be better.  So seeing the recent sci-fi related shows getting cancelled was disturbing to me.  Fortunately for us all, ABC has released it’s new fall 2009 schedule, and they have what appears to be a very interesting new sci-fi series planned for the coveted Thursday night 8:00 PM ET time slot.  The series, titled Flash Forward, has an interesting premise:

Flash Forward- When a mysterious event causes the entire world to black out, humanity is given a glimpse into its near future, and every man, woman and child is forced to come to grips with whether their destinies can be avoided or fulfilled. Adapting award-winning author Robert J. Sawyer’s revolutionary novel, executive producers David S. Goyer (visionary co-writer of “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight”) and Brannon Braga (”24,” “Star Trek: Enterprise”) invite you to embark on a journey to answer the question, “if you knew what your future held, what would you do?”

I’ve often found myelf wondering that same exact thing… Okay, maybe not, but it is still an interesting premise.  I like the talent involved in the series, namely Goyer and Braga as the Executive Producers.  There are also some interesting actors involved, like Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport , Sonya Walger, and Courtney B. Vance.  This show obviously smells like a success to ABC, as it gets the prime slot before one of the network’s biggest shows (that I don’t watch) Grey’s Anatomy and they are prepping the ad machine in attempts to get the word out about this show early.  The hope here is that this show will be able to draw men and women from all age groups, similar to the draw that LOST has.  If the show is as good as ABC thinks it is, this may be one of the first sci-fi shows to succeed on one of the major networks in a long time.  I’ll have my eye on this one, and right now I’d recommend you do too.

So, any thoughts on the series, the involved talent, or the issue of sci-fi tv in general?
