Welcome to the Comic Quick Picks for May 6th, 2009! This week we’ll take our first look at the Agent Orange storyline in Green Lantern #39 and we get to see two monsters locked in an epic battle in Solomon Grundy #2. Colorful and creative, these issues come with my highest recommendations!
DC Comics
Written by Geoff Johns, with art by Philip Tan and Jonathan Glapion. Cover art by Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert, with a variant cover by Rodolfo Migliari.
“Agent Orange Part 1 and featuring an “Origins and Omens” backup tale! As the orange light of avarice erupts in violence within the Vega System, the secrets of the Guardians’ pact with the criminals of the universe that has kept the Vega System off limits is revealed. Hal Jordan comes face to face with the mysterious and immensely powerful Agent Orange in a bizarre confrontation.”
With the DC event “The Blackest Night” rapidly approaching, this Green Lantern issue is an essential read. The Green Lantern comics have lately been dealing with a story arc being treated as a trilogy, with Green Lantern: Rebirth and The Sinestro Corps War being the first two in the trilogy and Blackest Night being the final part. These issues have dealt with the many colors of the universe. I’m a pretty big fan of this story idea, and of all of the “colors of the universe” I’ve been a bigger fan of the Orange Lantern than anything else so far. Agent Orange is wicked cool. Far and away my favorite Lantern in terms of look and design. Check out Green Lantern #39 to familiarize yourself with one of the coolest and definitely the most bad ass of all the many colored Lanterns. You’ll want to know as much as you can before The Blackest Night story launches, as it will be an event that affects the entire DC universe! Amazingly clean and equally stunning artwork make this a fine addition to any comic collection. Pick it up at Hero Haven Comics, along with all the other released Green Lantern issues in this trilogy series, for a mere $2.69
DC Comics
Story and artwork by Scott Kolins
“Christened on a Tuesday! Writer/artist Scott Kolins (FINAL CRISIS: ROGUES REVENGE, THE FLASH) brngs you the exclusive first-ever Solomon Grundy battle with Bizarro! The two monsters smash through Gotham City in a stirring, mind-blowing death match you’ll have to see to believe! Plus: Witness more of the origin of Cyrus Gold as he begins his evil destiny by committing his first horrid murder. Will Cyrus ultimately uncover who murdered him and unravel the Solomon Grundy curse forever?”
If you love brutal beat downs and epic battles, this is your issue. Two giant heavyweights locked in battle, and tearing up the streets of Gotham, smashing anything in their way and leaving rubble in their wake. Solomon Grundy has always been an intriguing character to me. Depicted differently at different times, he has been shown to be defeated by Batman while at other times he is shown to be fighting toe to toe with Superman. I’m happy to see Grundy got it’s own series. The character starts out of the gate with a bang, fighting a massive battle with Bizarro in only the second issue! Comic fans have seen the Green Lantern battle Solomon Grundy quite frequently, so it’s great to see him get into a slug-fest. Solomon Grundy #2 is very much a typical testosterone filled, “man’s man” comic, and I love that. Find this one at Hero Haven Comics for $2.69
Multi colored Lanterns and brutal beat downs. Who could ask for anything more?!? Remember, if you enjoy DC comics, no matter which DC hero/villain you enjoy, you’ll need to prepare yourself for the ultimate Lantern event The Blackest Night. No better way to do that than to check out Green Lantern #39. If you like slug-fests, boxing matches, MMA, street fights or indoor ass kicking, you’ll really enjoy Solomon Grundy #2. All in all, going through my collection to find some issues for this post, I probably had the most fun I’ve ever had doing this piece when I went back and re-read these two issues. You’ll definitely enjoy!
