Posted on: April 30th, 2009 ‘Moon’ A Rare Return to Form For Sci-Fi?
If you haven’t yet seen the trailer for Moon, you are in for a treat.
The upcoming film, starring Sam Rockwell and directed by newcomer Duncan Jones, tells the story of a lunar base employee finishing up a lonesome 3 year tour of duty all alone on the moon. Naturally, in classic sci-fi nature, two-weeks before the astronaut’s scheduled return to earth, the ’s’ hits the ‘f’.
For a super-small budget, the trailer looks incredible, capturing the tones and atmosphere of great sci-fi like Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Also be on the lookout (or should that be ‘hearout’) for a well-chosen voice of the ships computer. There’s something just not right about those computers…
Check out the trailer below – the flick opens in June 2009, though I’m not sure how wide the release will be at this point. Sam Rockwell is a fantastic actor, and hopefully this flick can propel him a little more, and maybe give some more breadth to the sci-fi genre in general.
On a side-note, Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (2007) is a brilliant sci-fi film that was sadly one of the worst marketed films I can think of – if you’re a sci-fi fan like me, and the Moon trailer makes your pants tight, I strongly recommend Sunshine if you haven’t seen it yet.

May 1st, 2009 at 12:55 amI’m wondering how much exactly will be borrowed from 2001 – just the space version of cabin fever and psychotic killer robot with a sultry monotone voice – or more?

May 1st, 2009 at 7:44 amRegardelss if it plays too much of said films, i am still really excited for this one, i think that with the recent trend of movies lately (IE Comic book based, stupid kiddie musicals and mindless gore porn horror/thrillers) this has the look and feel of something more and a breath of fresh air.

May 1st, 2009 at 9:17 amIt definitely looks like its paying its homages… kind of a blend of 2001 and Event Horizon… that being said it looks pretty well made, I’m excited. I’ve been jonesing for *good* sci-fi since Sunshine, as I mentioned in the post.

May 1st, 2009 at 9:37 amI am stoked, Sam Rockwell is an unerrated talent in Hollywood, he made Cahrlies Angels ever so slightly worth the waste of time i spent watching it along with Bill Murray.
I think Moon, will fly so far under the radar, that no one will really see it until its released on DVD, sadly.

May 1st, 2009 at 9:46 amThis movie looks great. Sam Rockwell is very talented and very under rated in my book. The film seemed to be masterfully crafted, with a great plot and solid acting. Seems like this is a film that a lot of people really took the time to make sure this film was done right. It could’ve easily turned into something bland, and I guess it still could, but it appears to be done very well. I’m looking forward to it.
BTW, I love the comparison to Event Horizon and 2001. Good call

May 4th, 2009 at 1:49 amRegardless of my earlier concern that this movies plot seems a bit, well, “borrowed” – I still think it looks as entertaining as heck. Sam Rockwell will be a highlight for sure.
