Posted on: March 26th, 2009 The Pull-List: Deadpool Games of Death One Shot
I know Deadpool is a beloved character to many, and recently I have to admit I have grown to be a fan, but this book was really just ok. I was excited about it when I saw it was coming out and really wanted to like it, but it just didn’t meet Deadpool standards.
The book is short and doesn’t offer too much. It starts with Deadpool being offered a job by Mr. Kilgore to find his son, Julian. His son is a spoiled brat who can’t seem to do anything right. Here with the opening page and Deadpool’s comments make you think that this is a book that could be something really good. His son is supposedly missing on some island where they shoot a reality TV show where people have to survive to get one million dollars. It sounds like it could go somewhere really funny, but no. Just like reality TV shows, (and I’m sorry to anyone who really does enjoy them but this is just my opinion) it sucks.
He gets to the island, flirts with the coordinating chick (which ok, is kind of funny), but from there they introduce the cast. No one is the least bit interesting, and although they try to make it funny by using the stereotypes that we all get a good laugh out of now and then, it’s just not funny.
So they start the show with Deadpool, who isn’t dressed as Deadpool, and other characters, who we really don’t care about, and one by one they all die. At the end, there are two left and they expose that they knew Deadpool had a mask on the whole time. Again, we just don’t really care as an audience. Finally everyone is dead, and Deadpool is the only one left standing, which I guess is the proper thing for a Deadpool comic.
There are a few twists at the end, which I won’t ruin if you still decide to go pick it up, but overall I was not happy. I think there is so much you can do with Deadpool, and they just dropped the ball with this One Shot. The art is ok, the writing is ok, so just overall this one is just ok. Let me know what you guys thought of this if you already have read it, or if you have any comments or questions, just post it.

March 26th, 2009 at 5:59 pmI really enjoyed this, but, I am a huge Deadpool fan.
I really didn’t expect any twists in the story, or any surprises, for that matter. I can say I’ve read every Deadpool appearance, and he just doesn’t have many surprises in his comics. I love the humor, and again, sorry, but I have to disagree that I thought this was classic Deadpool dead-pan humor. I loved it.
But clearly, this isn’t for everyone. I suspect casual comic fans wouldn’t enjoy it much. I’d bet that the people who enjoyed it the most are the big Deadpool fans. It wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I enjoyed it.

March 26th, 2009 at 6:48 pmHey Jon, sorry. Just to let you know I just became interested in Deadpool, I haven’t really have had to much time to get to know Wade Wilson. All I really have gotten was recent titles and it seemed to me like there was more to the character in the newest volume of Deadpool comics then there was in this new One-Shot.
Right now I’m actually reading the four part Circle Chase on Deadpool and I’m really enjoying that. Also I just got my hands on the whole Cable Deadpool series which I will be reading in the near future. If you can recommend anything else I would like that. Thanks for the input.

March 26th, 2009 at 8:39 pmThe best Deadpool I’ve ever seen was the Cable/Deadpool civil war tie-in.
Also, and I know this may be lame, but his original solo series run lasted about 60 issues I think, and all of those are great. If you are just getting into the character, I definitely recommend you start at Deadpool #1, so you get a little better understanding of the character. He’s complex, if you haven’t figured it out already.
Also, the Deadpool/Daredevil issue was great too. But definitely try to find Deadpool #1 and work from there. The whole weapon x/cancer cure/Ajax/T-Ray story (believe it or not, they are all intertwined) is unbelievable. When you find out the conclusion to the T-Ray story arc with Wade’s wife and his “true origins”… Oh man, it’s the one real mind-f*ck you’ll find in Deadpool comics. It’s Awesome.
Don’t have to apologize for your opinions. Games of Death isn’t for everyone. Suicide Kings, though, is great. Perhaps I should feature Deadpool: Suicide Kings in next week’s comic quick picks???
